Before exploring Uttarakhand ki Mithai, the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Uttarakhand is the majestic mountains looming out of the lush greenery. There is more to Uttarakhand than just the mesmerizing terrain.  Let me take you through a mouthwatering sweet journey of some of the unique traditional Mithais of Uttarakhand.

BAL MITHAI The pride of the place is held by the Bal Mithai which is the  specialty of the Almora district of Uttarakhand. It is a khoya-based fudge-like sweet and is generally coated with white sugar balls.

SINGORI  Singori is one of my favourite mithais of the Almora region. This is a mildly sweetened khoya dessert. The unique feature is that Singori is wrapped in Maalu leaf and is cone-shaped .

ARSA No festival or occasion is complete without this popular Uttarakhand ki mithai ,Arsa. Without worrying too much  I binge into this sweet since its low in calories. It occupies a special place in every household in the state.

ROAT Roat is another popular dish during marriages and other auspicious religious functions. This sweet bread  is widely served as  prashaad during poojas.

ROTANA / KHAJOOR The signature sweet of this region is Rotana or khajoor which is a fried cookie made of wheat flour, milk, suji, grated coconut, fennel seeds and jaggery . This dough is  moulded on a decorated wooden mold. Whenever I taste Rotana , I am reminded of the Bihar ka Thekua.

JHANGORE KI KHEER In the Garhwal region, Jhangore ki kheer is an indespensible part of the cuisine. This dessert is made with a type of millet known as Jhangora.  Another local sweet of Garhwal is Gulgula.

KUMAONI HALWA Kumaoni Halwa locally known as Pahadi halwa is a very different type of halwa and is a  treat to all the sweet lovers.

SINGHAL A popular tea time snack , Singhal is a mildly sweetened fritter usually served along with tea.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse of some of the pahadi  traditional desserts of Uttarakhand . There are many more Uttarakhand ki mithais to explore and enjoy in this region .
